Yan Liang was a prominent general under Yuan Shao during the late Eastern Han Dynasty and the early Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history, as depicted in Luo Guanzhong's historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
He first appears in the novel as Yuan Shao's vanguard during the campaign against Cao Cao after Cao Cao killed Dong Cheng and others, who was then discovered to be plotting against him with a secret edict.
Renowned for his immense strength and bravery, Yan Liang was considered one of Yuan Shao's most formidable warriors. However, his life was cut short at the Battle of Boma when he was swiftly slain by Guan Yu in one move. This event was pivotal, severely weakening Yuan Shao's forces and enhancing Guan Yu's reputation.
